Case Study #5 - Multi-Church Service Event

Background

This multi-city event brought hundreds of members from numerous churches together on a single day to beautify selected lower-income neighborhoods. Jobs ranged from doing yard work, to painting houses, to making minor repairs, to hauling away junk. The tasks varied but the mission remained the same – to serve others in Jesus’ name.

Role of Meet The Need

While this event had always focused on work done outside the house, the organizers saw the opportunity to expand the evangelistic aspect of the event by also meeting needs “inside the house”. So flyers were handed out during the event inviting local families, whether their houses had been worked on or not, to contact Meet The Need’s call center to request needs for clothes, books, small furniture, infant/maternity goods or other such items.

Success Story

Rather than an outreach “vacuum” forming after the excitement surrounding the event had subsided, members from participating churches continued to meet the physical needs of families in those neighborhoods long after the event ended. Therefore, the community knew that churches cared about them beyond just the hype of the big event. And church members whose heart to serve other was kindled by their work at the event would have opportunities to continue to serve in ways that fit their skills and interests.
